Klitschko Refutes Reports, Says Hand Is Fine; To Face Holyfield Next?
July 9, 2007 12:17 p.m. EST Eric Williams - Sports Reporter New York, NY (AHN) - Wladimir Klitschko, the reigning heavyweight champion for boxing's alphabet soup IBF and IBO organizations, says that a report stating that the Russian boxer broke his hand during his win over Lamon Brewster, is false. Klitschko pounded Brewster unmercifully throughout the fight, forcing a stoppage when Brewster refused to come out of his corner for the seventh round. However, Klitschko's assistant trainer, Jamen Ali Bashir, allegedly told AP that Klitschko had sustained a broken middle finger during the bout. "What are they saying about my hand over there?" Klitschko said in a telephone interview from Germany. "It's not broken. It's not a big issue. There is some damage but it's not that serious. Sometimes when you fight your hand swells up. In a couple of weeks I'll be fine. It's my health and people like to talk about it a lot." Brewster was the fourth straight American boxer Klitschko has stopped - all in less than seven rounds. SI reports that four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is interested in fighting Klitschko. Holyfield just defeated Lou Savarese on June 30 in a tenth-round decision. The 45-year-old has won his last four fights over two years and owns a 42-8-2 record with 27 knockouts in a career that dates back to 1984. Klitschko said he will consider Holyfield, but is also looking for a unification bout with the winner of the fight between WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov and WBA champ Ruslan Chagaev that will take place in October. "We need one champion," said Klitschko.

QUOTE(daprofessor @ Jul 9 2007, 03:56 PM) Doubt that DP! Wlad is on top of his game right now and will probably KO Holyfield early. This is not a good fight for Holyfield IMO! -------------------- ![]() I cannot tell you that I deserve a ranking. My job is to train and to box. QUOTE(daprofessor @ Jul 9 2007, 04:56 PM) That's a bold statement , man. I will say this for Holy, he will bring the most experience of any heavy out there. That alone will make it tough on Wlad. Not sure I want to see it. -------------------- "Sports do not build character. It reveals it." John Wooden
