Guardian pays damages to boxing commentator Steve Bunce

Newspaper agrees to pay damages following claims about a website in Marina Hyde column

The Guardian has apologised and paid damages to the boxing commentator Steve Bunce after falsely claiming that he used a website to try to get his show back on air.

Bunce's show on Setanta Sports came off air when the sports channel went into administration in June.

The high court in London heard that a column by Guardian writer Marina Hyde falsely claimed that Bunce used a website called bringbackbunce.net to claim supporters such as politicians Bertie Ahern and David Blunkett.

This allegation was false, Bunce's solicitor, Hanna Basha, of law firm Carter-Ruck, told the court.

Guardian News & Media, which publishes the Guardian and MediaGuardian.co.uk, had apologised and agreed to pay Bunce damages and his legal costs, Basha said.

DoghouseBoxing threw support behind BringBackBunce. It was not Steve Bunce's website. It was a site by the fans. Bunce NEVER EVER approached me and asked me to support the website. We supported the website because we totally agreed with the guy who made the website and we wanted to support HIS efforts to gather others who felt the same way to support Bunce. Sites like these happen all the time when fans want to support a canceled show. To accuse Bunce in print is outrageous.

I am very glad to see Bunce fought and won this one. He is 100% innocent of the outlandish claim. I would have gladly testified to that.

The female reporter that accused him was guilty of sloppy journalism and had an ongoing grudge against Steve for some reason. I hope she gets fired.

Guardian must have a few bob to spare - Carter-F*ck are expensive libel lawyers and their costs wont be cheap.
