Golden Boy insists Amir Khan versus Juan Manuel Marquez is ‘high risk, high reward’

Amir Khan’s new US promoters, Golden Boy, insisted, in the face of criticism from light-welterweight rivals that the Bostonian was avoiding mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana, that the anticipated contest being created against Juan Manuel Marquez was for a ‘high-risk, high-reward’ return.

Khan has been accused of sidestepping Maidana, the mandatory challenger for Khan’s WBA 140lb crown, by rival Paulie Malignaggi – the pair had a sparring duel of words on social networking site Twitter on Tuesday – and Timothy Bradley, but Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer insisted to Telegraph Sport that there was a grander design being worked on behind the scenes, a contest with Argentinian Maidana potentially two fights away.

Schaefer told Telegraph Sport: “It’s a dangerous fight, but it’s a ‘high risk-high reward’ strategy. If you want to capture the American market this is the way to do it, by beating the best current, active No 1 Mexican fighter out there. Win, and Emir makes his mark in the United States.”

Schaefer expects Marquez to ink his signature on the fight contract in the next 48 hours with the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, the likely venue, on May 15. Home Box Office sports will screen Khan’s US debut.

Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, concurs with Schaefer. Roach told Telegraph Sport: “This is the right fight at the right time for Amir. Yes, Marquez is dangerous, but Amir will do to him what he did to Marco Antonio Barrera in Manchester last year. He’ll break him up.”

Elsewhere, seventeen years after they first traded cultured fistic exchanges in a ring at middleweight, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr will meet again on April 3 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, most likely at light-heavyweight.

It was thought that the rematch between two US boxing legends may not take place after Jones was unceremoniously beaten in Australia last month, knocked out in the first round by Danny Green in Sydney.

Jones (54-6, 40 KOS) defeated Hopkins by unanimous decision, said: “We're giving the fans what they want to see. They deserve this fight and why not supply the fans with what they demand? Now I can finally terminate 'The Executioner' once and for all. My new nickname for this fight will be 'The Terminator'.”

Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KOS) said: “A rematch with Roy has been in the back of my mind for a long time and it's finally going to happen. I have accomplished a lot in my career since that night in Washington, DC in 1993, and I am going to end this thing between me and Roy once and for all.”

In Nottingham, Carl Froch, the WBC super-middleweight champion, has lodged a protest over the venue for his world title clash with Mikkel Kessler.

The bout, round two of the Super Sixes Classic pitting a group of the best 168lb fighters in the world against each other, has been scheduled by promoters Sauerland to take place in the Danish city of Herning.

Froch has insisted on Copenhagen or Nottingham, rather than Herning, regardless of potential earnings, citing the difficulty for travelling fans.

“It has got to be mutually agreeable and it’s never going to be mutually agreeable if the fight takes place in Herning. I’m simply not going to Herning,” said Froch.

thats why they have selected marquez, they see it similar to barrera - who the hell does khan think he is, using top fighters who are past their best and well out of weight categories to springboard his career - he needs to fight his own weight limit

but even though marquez is old and shouldnt be at 140, i still think he beats khan but it s a joke that khan is attempting to propel himself by focusing on what he thinks is an easy fight.

now heres a funny link - apparentlky klhan (if indeed it is him and not a wind up) is calling mallinaggi out (this i reckon in case they think marquez falls through for some reason) - khan saying he will beat the bumsin america - lol - what bums - the only bums are the ones he fought, esp salita.

everyone is now saying khan is running from maidana or any other guy that can punch a little at LW - hence why scahefer feels the need to defend that - if marquez falls through, you bet they still wouldnt go for maidana, it would then be a lightweight coming up - diaz probably, since malinaggi refuses to be used as a stepping stone.

maybe the british khan fans (novices they are) might realise how they have been conned now that wartren is starting to say the obvious in the press
