High-gear training

BY JUN MEDINA Special Correspondent

Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao stepped up his training for his coming March 13 title defense against Ghana’s Joshua Clottey, who he described as big, strong and dangerous.

Pacquiao’s diet and conditioning consultant Alex Ariza said Wednesday from Los Angeles that PacMan is “very sharp and looks like he’ll be ready to fight next week.”

Ariza said Pacquiao sparred seven rounds Tuesday and is expected to do seven or eight rounds on Thursday (Friday in Manila) at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California.

Pacquiao went three rounds with unbeaten junior welterweight Mike Dallas, two rounds with Brian Brook and another two rounds with Jose Benavidez, a speedy junior welterweight.

“Manny is doing absolutely great in training, and Freddie [Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer] is satisfied at the level we are in now,” said Ariza who also works as the renowned trainer’s assistant.

Ariza said he is focusing on strength at his stage of Pacquiao’s conditioning regimen, then top it all up with speed exercises as training camp tapers off, to maximize the Filipino icon’s deadly combination power and explosiveness.

Ariza thinks Pacquiao-Clottey “could be even better” than PacMan’s previous fight when he stopped Miguel Cotto in the final round to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown, Pacquiao’s record seventh world title in as many weight divisions.

Pacquiao’s bodyguard Rob Peters said the Filipino fighter is always in “good spirit” during his daily workouts.

“When you see Manny in such a cheerful mood during training, you know that he’s peaking nicely,” said Peters. “Manny is always in good spirit, and he makes training camp look so easy, which is very, very rigorous.”

Peter said the few Team Pacquiao members who are privileged to see Pacquiao train behind closed doors are amazed at how focused he is during his Monday-to-Saturday training and still remain cheerful and playful.

Pacquiao said he considers the taller and bigger Clottey dangerous because at stake in their fight is not just his WBO welterweight crown but also his mythical title as the best boxer in the world pound-for-pound.

”Clottey knows that he has nothing to lose in this fight . . . but I know he will try to do everything to score an upset,” Pacquiao wrote in Filipino Wednesday in his weekly tabloid column.

“That’s why I need to show that I’m the best in the world, come up with another masterpiece in the ring and to win convincingly.”

This fight is not worthy of pay per view and I will not pay to see this Bs. Ill catch it on the round reports on the internet. That fool and probable cheater is not legit and I refuse to pay to watch him fight BS fights. Until he faces Mayweather or Mosley he will always be a hyped guy who fights second rate fighters and then says he is the best. Thing is most silly sportwrighters think he is the best thing since applle f...ing pie and he ain't

What are you talking about?

this fight is awesome.

I'll tell you what BS is: It's fighting a 135 lb. fighter and then coming in overweight. THAT's BS.

The only person who has been proven a cheater here is Floyd as he cheated the weight. He also cannot fight other areas due to Xylocaine use.

Your quote in bold is better applied to
floyd. And it took an earthquake to force that one. Notice it also happened only AFTER PAc signed with Clottey, who was the best available at the time. Mosley became available after that fact.

The real point is that Pac signed Clottey while Mayweather was getting ready for.... wait for it...

NATE "Tiny Tim" Campbell.

THAT's BS.

Pac and Clottey is a great PPV fight which miyself and many others will pay to see.

Floyd threw a roadblock to a fight with Pac. That is not Pac's fault, It is Floyds. No fighter has to let their opponent dictate the rules. They go by the comission. Period.

floyd knows that. And he knew what the outcome would be.

for what it is, the fight is the #1 guy against the #4 guy, who was the absolute best available at the time. period.

I applaud him for being one of the few guys actually challengin himself and making big fights instead of taking the easy way out, unlike some people.

Pac chose the best available. Floyd got blindsided. That is the difference..

Unless Clottey wins he'll just be another name on the ledger.....no title, no significant win, it adds very little if anything to Pac's resume should he win.

you floyd fanboys crack me up.

First, you defend his fighting smaller fighters like it's some big deal, then when he is forced to fight someone good, you act like he wanted it the whole time, and finally, you try to detract from those who have been proving to be better in the ring.

Not only was Pac choosing the best available, but Clottey is a serious threat. His loss to Cotto was controversial. also, he was still the best available. there was not a single welterweight PAcquaio could fight that is better that was available at the time the fight was made.

Clottey was the best available. The fact that you try to deny it or even pretend to laugh it off (and it's a nervous little laugh...), just shows how out of touch with reality fanboys really are. you can turn off the reality distortion field now...

pac picked the best fight available and floyd went looking for a no hoper, per usual. then, after and act of God, shane became available and Floyd was force to either take the fight or look like a total punk.

What goes around comes around. floyd was talking smack and defaming people he has no reason to, so he gets forced to fight shane. Sounds about right. so not only do we get to see an awesome PPV with the #1 fighter in the world against yet another bigger credible threat, but then we ahve a couple months to save and watch another awesome PPV with a proven hall of fame lock in against the guy who has been TELLING us that he is one too.

the winner of these fights to face off afterward is the icing on the cake. It only makes sense that Shane and Floyd fight each other for the right to face Manny, who has already proven so much by overachieving in his tremendous career.

the March 13 fight is a PPV by itself simply because Manny is in it. Add to that, a big strong, proven contender in Clottey, and it's definitely a good buy. Anyone who bought the may-JMM fight and then try to dismiss this one is just in denial.
