WBC boxing festival Night of Champions to take place in Cardiff

Jul 21 2010 by Martin Williams, Daily Post

THE WBC Night of Champions international boxing festival begins on July 29.

The Cardiff event is a celebration of the sport, with around 100 current and former world champions, plus current rising stars of the sport expected to hit Wales over that weekend.

Among those confirmed to be attending are Roberto Duran, John Mugabi, Nigel Benn and Vitali Klitschko.

And the world film premiere of “Risen: The Howard Winstone Story”, a bio-pic of the Merthyr boxing legend, will also take place.

An official pre-Olympic tournament between our British Olympic hopefuls in Team GB and some of the finest boxers from around the world could be the highlight of the three-day event.

Leading male and female boxers from the United States, China, Sweden and Ireland make up the “Rest of the World” team to fight the cream of our hopefuls.

Wales’ European bronze medallist Andrew Selby said: “I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to go back to Cardiff and fight in front of the fans, especially when the likes of Vitali Klitschko and Erik Morales will be in the crowd.”

BABA Performance Director Rob McCracken said: “Everything we are doing is focused on delivering success at the 2012 Olympics and preparing our athletes in the best possible way.

“A key part of that is creating opportunities for the athletes to test themselves against top-quality opposition and this competition will definitely do that.

“I expect it to be a good learning experience for our athletes and another opportunity to benchmark both the men and women’s squads against top-class opponents and assess how they are progressing in the journey towards 2012.”

The tournament is being supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, and Welsh Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones AM added: “We are delighted to support the British boxing team as we prepare for the 2012 Games.”

For information and tickets call 029 2022 4488 or visit www.wbcnightofchampions.com.

Back in North Wales, Deva Police ABC hosts its annual presentation night at the Wings Social Club in Broughton on Friday.

It’s been a superb year for Joe Lovell and Andy Thomas, as well as Ash Appleby, the Rigg brothers and several Deva fighters who made their debuts, including Jack Rogers, so it should be an excellent night.

Unbeaten Manchester super-bantamweight Rhys Roberts will also there before he jets out to the USA for a month’s training in the Floyd Mayweather camp.

Shit Neil, I don't want to take anything away from your big night but you've got to get Haye there and maybe Audley. Could you imagine the publicity if a fight broke out between Vitali and Haye with Fraudley shouting insults and challenges from way over at the half-opened exit door laugh.gif
