Agbeko finally ready to face Mares in boxing clash

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Bantam weight world champion Joseph Agbeko will put his International Boxing Federation title on the line when he faces unbeaten Mexican Abner Mares in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The fight will match the Ghana-born Agbeko, 28-2 with 22 knockouts, against Mares 21-0 with one draw and 13 knockouts, in the finals of a four-man tournament that was originally set for April 23.

But that fight was postponed when Agbeko was injured moments after his arrival at Los Angeles International Airport for fight week. Doctors diagnosed the champion with a back injury (sciatica).

Mares is a 2-1 favourite for the fight which will take place at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

"I am totally ready for this. There's no way I can lose. The thought of defeat is not in my mind. I am ready for a war," Mares said.

"The final is here and I'm really happy about that. I had a tough fight in my last fight against (Vic) Darchinyan and now I am ready make my dream come true."

After his injury, Agbeko was advised by physicians to wait several weeks before resuming his fight training.

Agbeko went home to Ghana to recuperate but says he is healthy again.

"It's great to be back. Las Vegas is like my home. I made my US debut here. I want to thank my promoter, Don King, and all who made this fight and tournament possible," Agbeko said.
