Sister: Emanuel Steward's surgery, recovery ahead of schedule

Though the nature and severity of Emanuel Steward's illness and recent surgery continues to be debated around local gyms and across social media, the Kronk boxing icon apparently is alert, in good spirits and enjoying foot massages by his nursing team.

According to his eldest sister, Diane Steward-Jones, Steward, 68, was "recovering at a much greater than expected rate" from what she told the Free Press last week was stomach surgery to treat diverticulitis, a painful digestive disease that normally attacks the large intestine, which can become inflamed and infected.

On Tuesday evening, Steward-Jones e-mailed an update on her brother, the Hall of Fame trainer who guided the likes of Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Milton McCrory and Jimmy Paul to world championships in the 1980s and to this day remains one of the top trainers in the business.

Steward "is ahead of schedule in his physical healing, so much so that he is being moved to a different room on a different floor," Steward-Jones wrote. "This is a graduation of sorts -- he'll need less medical supervision with this move."

Although Steward-Jones did not say where Steward, who resides in Rosedale Park in Detroit and oversees the Kronk Gym on Warren Avenue in Detroit, is hospitalized, it is widely believed to be in the Chicago area.

Over the past couple of weeks, rumors have made the rounds that Steward is suffering from a more life-threatening disease -- possibly stomach and/or colon cancer.

In a show of support, a group prayer session for him was held in Walled Lake on Sunday, which drew about 50 people.

Although Steward-Jones and other members of his immediate family did not endorse or attend the service at Orchard Grove Community Church, Hearns was there.

He was joined by Detroit fight celebrity Jackie Kallen, who trained James Toney to a world title; Anita Ruiz, executive director of the Kronk Gym Foundation; and Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, former state boxing commissioner.

Steward-Jones did not reference her brother's medical ailment in her e-mail but did share other information, much of it humorous, on Steward's treatment and demeanor.

"He is getting spoiled," Steward-Jones wrote. "I made him a mixture of pure Shea butter and a bit of lotion, and he insists the nurses apply the concoction rather than the standard hospital lotion."

Steward-Jones said her brother was enjoying therapy using the mixture while watching football on TV.

"Ah, the life of Riley," she wrote. "He really is the darling of the floor -- the nurses just love him and his Shea-butter concoction."

Only family members are allowed to visit, and Steward is not making or receiving phone calls, Steward-Jones said, with one exception.

"A phone was brought into his room a couple days ago for five minutes," Steward-Jones wrote. "He was allowed by his doctors a brief, five-minute call from his most prized champion, (world heavyweight champion) Wladimir Klitschko.

"He and Wlady are best friends, and he grinned from ear to ear while Wlady conveyed his well wishes for a speedy recovery. That call must have been mixed with a magic elixir because he started to improve even more."

This is great news I wish Manny a speedy and permanent recovery.

Can't wait to see him doing the broadcast back on HBO.

Also, thank you for the update on his condition.
