The WBO had a choice to make in the wake of Peter Quillin relinquishing its middleweight world title last week: order mandatory challenger Matt Korobov to face Billy Joe Saunders, the next leading available contender, for the vacant belt or rule in favor of a petition from Demetrius Andrade, its junior middleweight titleholder, seeking to get a shot at the vacant title.

On Wednesday, the organization ruled in favor of Andrade, whose co-promoters, Artie Pelullo of Banner Promotions and Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, will begin negotiating the bout with Top Rank's Bob Arum, Korobov's promoter. The WBO said the sides have 15 days to reach an agreement or a purse bid will be ordered.

"We are very happy and delighted that the WBO has given Demetrius Andrade this great opportunity to fight for (a) middleweight world title," Pelullo said. "It's a great opportunity for Demetrius to become a two-division world champion. Matt Korobov and Demetrius Andrade were both 2007 world amateur champions and 2008 Olympians, Demetrius from the United States and Korobov from Russia. As professionals they are both undefeated and their paths will finally cross.
