How we could still get that Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

LAS VEGAS —Floyd Mayweather has been coy about whether he’ll retire once his six-fight deal with Showtime is complete. The fourth fight of a contract worth an estimated $250 million takes place Saturday night at the MGM Grand when Mayweather takes on Marcos Maidana of Argentina in a rematch of their rugged fight last May.

If Mayweather continues to fight twice a year, he’ll have his fifth fight in May 2015 with the sixth fight set a year from now in September. What happens Saturday night against Maidana could determine whether Mayweather’s opponent for at least one of those final bouts is Manny Pacquiao.

The long awaited showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao could become a reality if the interest and pay-per-view sales for Mayweather-Maidana 2 are disappointing. With Mayweather guaranteed to earn at least $30 million, anything south of 1 million buys may prompt the boxing public and more importantly CBS/Showtime to insist on the mega-matchup as a way to ensure a profit on Mayweather’s final bouts...
