Chris Algieri's road to Macau to fight Manny Pacquiao

The evolution of Huntington's Chris Algieri from obscure kickboxer into WBO world light welterweight boxing champion and challenger to WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao followed a long and improbable path. Here's a timeline tracking the arc of Algieri's career:

1994: Chris Algieri takes up martial arts at age 10 under the direction of Robert Mauro at the U.S. Karate Academy in Huntington.

1999: Earns black belt at age 15.

2000: Begins competing in amateur kickboxing events at age 16.

2001-02: Wrestling for St. Anthony's High School, Algieri wins two straight Catholic League championships and adds the Catholic state championship in 2002 as a senior captain of the team. He then turns down college wrestling offers to pursue his kickboxing career....
