A lot on the line in Macklin-Heiland

Middleweight contender Matthew Macklin has had three shots at world titles. There was a highly controversial split decision loss to Felix Sturm in Germany in 2011. There was a competitive 11th-round knockout loss to Sergio Martinez, whom he knocked down, in 2012, and there was a third-round knockout loss to Gennady Golovkin on a rib-cracking body shot in 2013.

Now Macklin is one victory away from putting himself in position to challenge for another title when he takes on Argentina’s Jorge Sebastian Heiland on Saturday (Sky Sports in the United Kingdom) at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

The winner will be lined up for a shot at the belt currently held by champion Miguel Cotto, although it could be a few fights away. Cotto is likely to face Canelo Alvarez in May and the winner of that fight owes Golovkin a fight because of the interim belt he holds. But the winner of Macklin-Heiland will be in a great position...
