Report: Hatton struggling to make weight limit
05/01/2009 | 05:24 PM
MANILA, Philippines – It appears cracks are beginning to show up at Ricky Hatton’s camp less than 48 hours before the “Hitman" slugs it out with Manny Pacquiao in the Battle of East and West on May 2 (May 3 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Weight problems and a reported misunderstanding with trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. had left Hatton cramming for form – physically and mentally – going into his 12-round fight with Pacquiao where his International Boxing Organization (IBO) light-welterweight title is at stake.

Alex Ariza, Pacquiao’s conditioning coach, believes the 30-year old boxer from Manchester, England has yet to comfortably meet the 140-pound limit based on the road work Hatton was still doing Thursday at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas campus.

Ariza talked to one of the strength and conditioning coach who was around when Hatton jogged around the campus oval. “My source saw them running out in the sun, so probably he’s still struggling to make weight."

A known beer drinker when not in training camp, Hatton had struggled several times in the past just to meet the junior welterweight limit.

Ariza’s revelation came in the heels of the alleged rift between Hatton and Mayweather Sr. Hatton reportedly felt miserable working out under the outspoken Mayweather Sr., whose practice of coming late in training doesn’t sit well with the two-time world champion.

Mayweather Sr., hired by Hatton last year to replace long-time trainer Billy Graham, didn’t deny the matter, but stressed out that everything else had been settled with Hatton.

“I addressed the situation and the problems I had with him," admitted Mayweather Sr. “I addressed things with him. I let him know I don’t play that, don’t do that. He knows now."

“I won’t disrespect him. If I don’t want someone else disrespecting me in no kind of a way, I’m not going to disrespect anybody else in no kind of a way. We have a very clear understanding between each other. I make sure I have a clear understanding with everybody I train because nobody is going to be jerking me around and I take no mess off nobody," said Mayweather Sr.

Ariza, however, couldn’t care less about Hatton’s rift with his trainer. He’s more concerned on the physical condition of Pacquiao’s opponent.

“The tale would be after the weigh-in when I hear how much he weighs in," Ariza said. “If he’s over 150 pounds, his body is gonna be weak and I think Manny will go right after him." – GMANews.TV

we don't know what's going on mike john behind the scenes. floyd mayweather snr is a perfectionist, if he isn't going to get perfection out of hatton then he's going to be pissed off, if he's not getting 100% then he's not just going to accept that, that's not the type of trainer he is. we also don't know if it's mayweather snr being the Kunt. we just don't know what's going on behind the scenes top make a valid opinion on this.

This is the only fighter that I can remember that everything has to be damn near perfect in order for him to compete. The fight has to take place at approximately 140lbs. He has to to have a specific ref that will allow him to get away with a few rough house tactics without being penalized. But, to his fans it's known as letting Hatton fight "His fight" If he isn't allowed to fight "His fight" then it's an outcry. Nevermind maybe trying to make some adjustments during the course of the fight if Plan A isn't working.

He's also unable to compete at 147lbs....why? Because his ONE DIMENSIONAL tactics don't at 147lbs. He'll just hang around at 140lbs and face smaller opponents moving up from 130lbs-135lbs. If a Welterweight contender were to move down from 147lbs and face Hatton. All of his fans would b*tch his opponent being the naturally "Bigger" man. But, it's fine and dandy for Hatton to have a size advantage over his opponents. Go figure why he wants Marquez in his next bout...it isn't about Pound for Pound status. It's about fighting a smaller opponent. I'm glad Mayweather is taking Hatton avenue in fighting in fighting Marquez. That leaves Hatton with minimal choices for his next opponent. I'd like to see him face Andre Berto or Tim Bradley next

I'm tired of the excuses...now he's supposedly having trouble in his training camp? Man...whatever. If that Lil Dwarf loses I'll be unrelenting and murder his ass on every Blog site I come across...I'm down talking about this Pug Faced HOBBIT...I've spent 15mins on my Blackberry ranting and raving...I hope he losses and losses miserably! Peace. Live From Baltimore, Md.!

all of this, and then you have floyd mayweather jr as your avatar. blink.gif

And, I didn't proof read my last blog so if you wanna criticize a few mispelled words....feel free to do so...as long as you got the message which I'm sure you did. Screw Ricky "GET Hitman" Hatton...he's an over-rated Club Fighter.

A weight issue wouldn't surprise me. Training with FMS seems to be more technical & tactical than the explosive fitness training he did with Billy Graham.

In interviews etc, Hatton doesn't look anywhere near as cut as he usually does imo.

I can't discredit it more then it's already been. The fight fight took place at 147lbs not 140lbs and the ref didn't allow Hatton to fight "His fight" The damage is already done. I'm just Hatton is apart of Mayweather's highlight reel

was just taking a general shot at sr champ, not refering to any alleged weight making problems. the guy gets under my skin. hes got an ego you could pin a billboard to. its the way he talks and draws attention to himself. i remember when he re-appeared on the scene to stab oscar ( his former fighter ) in the back in the run up to the floyd fight. now hes turning up late for training sessions?

hes a perfectionist all right. hes perfected the art of being a right twat

Don't believe the hype.

This coming out 12 hours later now has me questioning the first report of friction between Hatton and Mayweather.

Team Pacquiao is playing games which is either a sign of concern, or your classic one-upsmanship...

it's the ego that would get to me, but hatton knew what he was like, he knew the character of floyd snr is'nt that much different from his son, which is why they probably clash. roger seems to be the same aswell. i tell you what i would love to be in that household, probably be funny as fvck arguing who's got the best roast potatoes for their dinner. laugh.gif

i'm surprised hatton ever chose floyd snr.

it's always everyone else with the excuses.

collazo got robbed.

tszyu was shot.

hatton delivers and gives his all everytime out.

proofs in the pudding (quite literally biggrin.gif).

never had any issues with the mayweather fight.

hatton tried his best and was beaten fairly and squarely.

can understand hatton's frustrations with the ref and that was all it was. rolleyes.gif

u can't blame a man for wanting a rematch with the guy that beat him.

and he will get one if he can pull this off on saturday night. wav.gif

Considering Pac is only about 5-7 pounds smaller than Floyd, and that Floyd has fought
HATTON, DLH, and undisputed WW champ, and next JMM...while Pac has fought
HATTON, DLH, and paper belt 135 champ, and JMM in their last 4 fights...i don't see where Pac gets anything over on Floyd.

Floyd jr does the exact same thing. He always fighting if not little guys, guys that are past their prime. Hatton,de la hoya now marquez. Are u kidding me? And he wants to be called the best? At one point he was but not anymore he has to start fighting the big boys.

Highly unlikely that he'll win. If Hatton pulls off the unlikely win against Pac, and fights Floyd again, he'll be humiliated just like he was in the first fight. Floyd was bullying Hatton around, proved to be the stronger guy, and obviously Floyd is just a much better fighter than Hatton. There's no way for Hatton to beat Floyd, none. I don't like Hatton or Floyd, but that's just the reality of the situation.

Report: Hatton struggling to make weight limit
